Your pictures are awful dark, but from what I can see, it looks like a Neptune, built by Muncie Corp. These are usually 1.7hp in size and very light weight, which makes them good little trolling motors.

Re: What is this??

Could be a late 30's Neptune. It's probably 1.2HP (I have a 1938 motor), noisy, smokey, but fun and a precurser ro the 1.7 HP Mighty Mite. Coils are usually shot, especially if there's any cracking. A bad coil will often allow starting, then fail when warm. If you can show some better pictures, a better chance to nail it, but likely a 1A39 model.

I owned a 70's vintage 1.7HP which I bought new and haven't missed that smoky messy little sucker very much!

See here for history:

Re: What is this??

The ID on the Neptune's is a circular loose brass plate on top of the flywheel which gives the model and serial no. and is retained by the flywheel nut. If it's a Neptune it's apparently missing.

AC-1C was a Tillotson carb Muncie Gear used in 1941, which may help date the motor.
