Re: What is with the attitude lately?

Hi,
I am a new member and haven't made but a few posts , and in replies I have been talked down to and in a neg. manner what gives ? It was my impression that this would be a great forum to get a lot of good information which I have by just reading , but to participate has been not so good.I made my rank in the USN I don't need to here, I seems that some people make posts just to make posts , however I have enjoyed the informative information that I have read here, much very good & helpful, I just not as apt to partcipate, by asking any questions in future, thanks for letting me get off a little steam--Sandy

You are showing five posts at this point.
I took a couple of minutes and read them and their threads.

With all due respect, can you point out what you might have found the slightest bit condescending or negative?:confused:

They are extremely benign threads, and considering that one of them that you posted to was from 2003, you might well have got a snarky comment for that....but there was none.

We are not perfect in here, but I am sorry, I see no issue with those at all and am a bit puzzled at what your expectations might be.

I was just checking that out myself as well.
Tim I have to agree completely with you.
Wondering what the issue is :confused:

on a side-note what's a troll?

Google is your friend for a more detailed response. It's an intentionally inflammatory post intended to get a response.

I haven't been subjected to it here, but grammar correction is petty and non-productive. Problems is I kan't speel worth a shot and on top of that I'm lysdexic. Something about reading the word SET or SETTING in place of SIT or SITTING kind of get's under my skin, but those guys are usually worth a TON of wisdom and knowledge so who cares.

...

I like the posts by the guy who is always correcting people's grammar, spelling, capitilization and punctuation. I ask myself why the heck does someone care about this stuff when the questions being asked are always boat related???

on a side-note what's a troll?

A troll is someone who reads a forum to no end, but either doesn't join, or joins but never contributes. It's common in all forums, and not a big deal (to me at least).

I'm one of the guilty ones about grammar/spelling/punctuation. It's one of my pet peeves about forums. I realize that for the most part, spelling and such isn't vital, but when there isn't a single word spelled properly, so you really want to read it? Half the time I can't understand what the question is because the sentences are structured so poorly. Typo's are understandable, but in today's day and age, with spell-checkers everywhere, why should we be subjected to moronic sentences by someone who wants our help? If they can't take the time and effort to properly construct their message, should we be expected to take the time and effort to type out an answer or suggestion? Typically, when it's a 1st grade type sentence, you'll never see them again anyway. I am not referring to when someone has a difficult time explaining what they mean, we all have that problem at times. It's sentences like this:
Belises atach too you're Merccruzier end flexilate too keep water out off you're haul, of coarse!
that don't warrant an answer. (Quote taken from a post made in jest).

Oh, and don't quote Red Foremen, it'll get removed. :D

Wow! What did i get started?
Sometimes it is good to air things out...

I'm really glad we all talked this out to some point though.
At least many of us older members have noticed the change.

And,If i have offended anyone in the past please PM me and we will make it right..:)

No that's a lurker. A troll contributes but only to start a flame-war.

Examples of possible troll threads:

"Ranger boats suck, VIP rocks"--of course any ranger owner is going to come in and defend his boat. It's made just to enjoy the show of people fighting.

There are endless possibilities, especially in the political realm. Since politics are no longer allowed, you dont see many trolls anymore.

A troll could also be someone who just comes in, posts one thing, and leaves. That's called a spam post. They are usually pretty obvious, and sometimes funny.

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

That's a flamer.

Sorry a flamer is someone that trashes someone else for whatever reason, usually name calling etc in the process. Example, "So and so is an idiot for saying X boat is better than Y boat. They are so stupid cause there mom dropped them down a flight of stairs." BUT is gets much worse. I have not seen any such posts on this site as of yet. In regards to your post about grammar and poor sentence structure, 99% of the time that is someone that does not speak English. They are often embarrassed about that fact and may or may not humbly apologize for bad English. When I first started reading those posts (on other forums) it annoyed the crap out of me, but over the years I came to realize these folks are doing the best they can. OTOH those posts by the kids with lots of extra EEEEs on the end and other sch non-sense drive me up the wall. byeeeeeeee for nowwwww!

My dad says he doesn't have an anger problem if people would just stop pissing him off.

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

I was not going to reply to this thread, even though I have seen it myself. But now I feel I must.

People are fast to judge. If they read something and they do not like it or think their way is better, they react sharply.

That being said, by all comparisons, I am a relatively new member. Only been a member of the site for a little over a year. I almost did not make it two months. But thanks to QC, I am still here and trying to help others with what I know. I am no guru by any means, but have had several years of trial and error on many topics that come up here.

And yes, there has been an increase in hostility. Some real, some perceived.
But with that being said, there has been some level of it even back when I joined.

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

There should be an internet name for someone who has to have the last word in a thread. We've got a number of those.

Piling on is also a problem. For example, if 5 people have already told someone not to tow X with X....maybe you don't need to also.

The ones of us that have been around here for a long time know that is just the way you are.....not an azz but just to the point..;)

Agree on the no punctuation....that gets to me too.
It reminds me of how my ex-wife would talk non stop without taking a breath....lol!

Re: What is with the attitude lately?

Let me stick my 2 cents in, I use to post alot on the mercury site but have turned into a lurker over the last year. I like Bondo am a hunt and peck typist, so each answer takes awhile, I am marine mechanic not a typist. The problem that causes most of my irritation is one that can't be solved. As the forum has grown the new members get more and more inept at repairs which is fine as it is good to help others out if you understand their problem. My irritation is with the people that answers for people that don't even know the color of a mercury outboard, they waste time and money for the people that need the help of this forum with their inept answers. Why they do it is confusing, it may be self inflation or post count I don't really know, it would be good to get rid of the post count, hopefully that would get rid of the padders and their dumb ***** answers. Most mechanical questions are answered better by a mechanic than some computer geek with all his expertise.

With responses like the first one in this thread I can see why members get a little testy at time.

Ok this one's done. We can't get into posting specific examples of others perceived transgressions.
