What is worse than buggering up a screw or bold head?

Answer: Trying to remove one someone else buggered up and left as a special gift for the next guy!

Working on my brothers tractor and have a 3/4" bolt head that is completely rounded off, looks like a pipe wrench was used on it and it refuses to budge. One more try (soaking with penetrating oil right now) and if that doesn't work it's time to get the smoke wrench out!!!

Now ask me how much I want to yell at my brother.

worse yet...having a mechanic tell you that your bolt "rusted round" he promises he didn't touch it with a wrench. even though the part being held on by the bolt is suspiciously the one he was supposed to repair......

I give him credit, when I explained to him that bolts don't "rust round" he stuck to his story to the very end. Of course he did lose money on a repair he was unable to do, and I wound up taking it home and doing it myself, but hey....at least he didn't have to give up on his story. LOL

It all depends on what side of the "buggering" you are on. Seems to me your brother is on the right side.....;);):D

Smoke wrench? LOL that is a required tool here in VT where we have rust. It does not even require much thought and it is a very usual way of doing things. 23 yrs ago when I was in MO getting work done on a pick-up....the local mechanic was shocked and had never seen so much rust. He asked if he could use a smoke wrench and I just laughed and figured everybody did.

Snapping it off flush would be worse

Drilling a hole through your thumb while prepping for the ez-out, would be worse.

yep, that was the problem I had above. mechanic was in FL and the truck was from WI. I told him normally if I have to bring it to a shop I soak them pretty well with PB Blaster or such a day or two before I bring them in but hadn't had time. I forgot they didn't have to deal with rust like we do.

I try to avoid the "heat" as much as possible. I'm always afraid I'll just end up welding it together...LOL

BTW...... I knew a mechanic years ago that would charge if he used his smoke wrench and called it a "burn charge" to cover his gas supplies and band-aids.

Snapping the bolt then going through the the whole process of dealing with the bolt . Getting everything back together then find out it was not the problem at all ...

many years ago my brother snapped 3 spark plugs of a 4 banger. Turns out he thought a impact was a great tool for removing spark plug its just a shame it was running backwards. Nothing like fixing someone else's mess In the middle of the night when its freezing cold. To this day I have no idea why he didn't stop when the first one wrung off.

Ive done this with old lug nuts, and locking lug nuts that you no longer have the key for. Was very easy, saved a bunch of time and skin !!

I second welding a bolt on top of the stripped nut. I have done it many times and usually saves the need for touch up paint.

What is worse is when you finally pull the bolt out, and all the threads in the block are still wrapped around the bolt.
