All ahead full means a set speed, about 30 knots in a DD. FLANK speed is battle speed, everything you've got. The term comes from a battle tactic. To flank the adversary is to get around the end of his battle line (his flank) to apply enfilading fire.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB

Where did the term "flank speed" come from? It is used by both Navy and merchant vessels as the absolute maximum speed for a vessel. It was used primarily to circumvent and triangulate a confirmed target. Today, computers do it.<br />Steak is a bonus. I take mine rare.
