Re: what keeps you going thru winter?

so far, i've been keeping busy with attempting to keep my small business alive. which is proving challenging as this stupid economy sure is in the tank. if i don't keep it alive, doubt i'll even be going boating next summer for lack of funds. sure hope i succeed... lack of business (making a living) is even taking the fun out of thinking about boating (at least for me). which i find hard to believe considering how much i enjoy boating. but w/o funds, boating does seem to take a backseat. at least to making a living anyways...

Re: what keeps you going thru winter?

well good luck on teh business end, hope it picks up for you.

Being a single guy in his 20's, I can adjust my lifestyle to spend very little money in ways that someone older, or married, or with kids couldn't. Like this winter, I took my couch out of my storage unit, put it at a friends house, and will be paying a couple hundred a month as 'rent'. Sure beats the $900/month craphole apartment I had last year, helps me pay off some stuff so I can be sure I have the money to launch the boat again in the spring. Might get even easier for me too, as just today I was offered a job as a machinist at a local shop that seems to love to hand out money for weird stuff like showing up to work on time, and wearing safety glasses and steel toes. Always figured that was a pretty basic requirement, right after 'show up for work in the morning'.

What keeps me going in winter? Well, um ..... going out in my boat!

I know, I know, those of us with a 12 month boating season can really be obnoxious at times! ;)

I'd be twice the lush I am now if I had to winterize my boat. I don't fish as much during the winter but I do get my fixes in. Hitting one of the rivers this weekend for the winter run steelhead.

Ever notice that even though a poster asks a question of people in northern climes, that the 12 month season boaters feel the need to jump in and brag HAHAHA. Something seems a little insecure about them every time.

Me, I work on my hotrods, go rock crawling, and work on my house. I'm thankful for the off season, if I didn't have one I'd possibly neglect some maintenance on my boat.

I go to all the boat shows within a couple hundred miles of here. Hanging out with other boaters, drinking a few beers, and drooling over brand new boats always helps.

I ride my dirtbike when the weather allows, and the winter is also a good time to go on vacation.... I'm leaving Sunday for the BAHAMA'S! :D

Re: what keeps you going thru winter?

This is my first "winter" with a boat, and so far I have several projects planned out that will hopefully stretch to March. I plan on using my boat some over the winter, but the days nice enough to boat will be sporadic at best, so I foresee much layup time. I just installed a fishfinder w/ transom mount transducer. Here's the rest of my list:

1) build removable, carpeted platform with fishing seat for open bow area
2) bow mounted trolling motor (mount and wire)
3) install deep cycle battery for trolling motor
4) install cd player with at least two speakers (I'll get flak from some on this forum that prefer the "quiet" of nature. I promise it will not be obnoxiously loud.)
5) Figure a way to mount rear fishing seat to sundeck area (plan still in progress)
6) wax entire exterior
7) Shampoo/steam clean carpeting

This list is in addition to the honey-do list provided of stuff to do around the house, such as tile the foyer, kitchen, and laundry room. Finish landscaping the back yard. List goes on...and on...

The title of the thread is What keeps you going thru the winter. Didn't know it was open exclusively to the Northern boaters. I live in the PNW right now and still fish year round.

Re: what keeps you going thru winter?

Sledding, trail riding, and ice fishing certainly kill most of the winter blues, but don't get rid of them temporarily.... my boat is in the backyard, so I can go touch her, talk sweet to her all winter long... I know she is as excited as I am for spring!
