I read the posts that capt ken and rodbolt contributed to about the removal of the powerhead bolts on excel engines. I am thinking of taking this on and was wondering what SIZE drill bit to use to drill through the bolts is there a specific brand type that you have had better luck with. thanks in advance

ill go through it again.
I use the Dewalt TiN bullit point bits with a no slip shank.
3/8ths can be used, sometimes I use a 1/2".
depends on how well my eyes are focusing.
if your really really good you can use a 5/16ths.
nice thing about the bullet point is the dont walk if you partially miss the bolt diameter and the tend to cut a relativly flat hole.
get up as close to the powerhead mounting face as possible and try to drill perpendicular to the bolt and in the bolts centerline.
the object is to cut the bolt in two.
after the head comes off force the remaining broken stud from the midsection by driving it UP. dont even think of going DOWN.

Thanks for the quick reply. How often do you encounter a problem twisting out the piece thats left with the vise grips?

with Vise grips? most likly aint gonna happen, once the powerhead is off break off the bolt head and drive the stup UP. sometimes chlorox bleach will aide in breaking up that corrosion.

The reason i said vise grips was capt Ken said thats what he uses to remove the piece thats left in the powerhead.
