What brand and kind of oil do I need for the lower unit of a 1977 Johnson seahorse 6 go? Thank you. Also how much?

That motor is not very demanding. Any brand of 80-90 weight outboard gear oil will do. Hi-Vis is better. You put it in the bottom plug till it comes out the top. It holds about 9 ounces if you don't spill too much.

A quart of gear oil might be a life time supply.

Really? 1 quart is 32 oz, so if it takes about 9 ounces then I could get 3 changes with 1 quart. Don't I need to change this annually though? Thank you again. I appreciate the education. I'm a newbie. :)

Fact---Oil and lubrication are not well understood.-----The lower unit is sealed.---No water or contaminants should get in.-----You can leave oil in for years as long as no water gets in.------There are always other opinions when it comes to oil !

Key words there are "as long as no water gets in". OMC expected a bit of water to get in, therefor they said to change it as part of maintenance schedule. Or at a minimum at least check it.

The 6 hp has no ball bearings in the lower unit.----It has bushings with oil grooves.-Water is a no, no in there .---The proper oil is a must.----Use OMC / BRP factory HY-VIS oil.
