i had a hole in my vynal on one of my side trim pads in my boat. listed below. guess it let water into the hole and rotted out my board. got it off and am wondering if there is any special type of wood i should use to repair it. my guess is that it won't really matter as something else will break long before the board will rot again. but still wondering. guess i was thinking any old ply board would be good enough. it's got half inch thick plywood on it now. thought i'd put some maraine varnish ontoit. let it dry and put my upualstry back on, maybe....

If you can find it, 3/8" pressure treated plywoood. 1/2" is overkill, but it may be all you can find. Even 1/4" would probably be adequate, and lighten the boat a few pounds ... if you can find it.

so pressure treated would be the way to go if i can. i wondered. would the varnish be worthwhile or should i just use the board as is? yeah, i measured it at 1/2" thick. it may have been 3/8 to start with and swelled with the water intrusion, it sure measured closer to 1/2 though. the problem to overcome after decideing what kinda board i should use is to find one that's 100" long. or 8'4"'s :( .

Could you laminate two pieces of 1/4" ply and overlap the joints?

You could use an exterior plywood and shellac it if you prefer. Pre-treated is toxic, not that your'e going to be eating off it. It wouod just save you the step of protecting the wood.

Depending on the size you need,I found the best thing to use was a plastic (starboard like) cutting board that I bought at the .99 store.Charlie

at 8 ft 4 inches,, that's a problem..

since it's just trim,, i'd epoxy glue/butt joint 2 pieces together .. an apply flat perferated 'framing flat plates' to both sides.. tacked/shared/centered on both boards..

wouldn't go 8 foot piece an a 4 inch piece.tho..

more like 6 foot piece an a 2 ft 4in piece together..

pt ply would work best ..imho..

Isn't the diagonal of a 4x8 sheet 107" or 8'11"?

Can you shape your piece out of that?

Re: what kind of board to use?

thanks for the info folks. the spliceing idea and the diagonal idea was what i was thinking to. i was talking to a buddy the other day. he suggested i use a regular treated board and then run it thru his planer to get it straight and the right thickness. think there would be any ramifications from useing a regular board? it has quite a few bolts to hold it to the boat. i kinda liked that idea as it would be cheap enough to get just a board as opposed to a 4X8 sheet of plywood. or 4X9 if they even come in that size. i also like the idea of just cuttin a useing treated wood as opposed to varnish or shilacking it.
