What's wrong with having 8 people in a boat that can haul 9 legal its usually 3 or 4adults and 3 or 4 kids

Nothing. I was just clarifying for haulin'. It just appeared by his reply he wasn't aware of the other 4 people. Maybe I'm wrong. No biggy...

Get yourself a 24' tritoon with lifting strakes and a 250 on it.

There's no rule as to when the boat's were made with a wider beam. You would have to find a few models that you like and investigate the specs on them as to whether or not they have a wide enough beam for you.

There are some pretty nice late 1990's boats out there that would fit your needs. My take is that in that era some brands were way ahead of others but in that length they will all be wider than your current boat.
