What kind of control box for a Yamaha 90

My boat has an 88 Yamaha 90 on it and a Yamaha 703 throttle control on the side of the center console. I mean on the actual side of the console where you can snag it if you walk by it. The control works fine but it looks like it was rigged to work on that console. I’m completely restoring the boat and want to add a throttle control box that fits on the console next to the steering wheel. I looked at a Yamaha 704 throttle control box online and it looks like the one I want to install but I don’t know if that’s the one I need. What all is involved in changing throttle control boxes? Can I use the same harness and cables? Do I have to use a Yamaha throttle box or is there a universal one that will work? I noticed that the 703 control that I have on it now has the key, choke, and a safety kill switch on it and the 704 doesn’t. Will I have to install all those separately?

I know there are a lot of questions but I’m just learning about all this.

Thanks,
Charles

hello
sell the 703 box and purchase the correct 10 pin main harnes and the key switch panel. its technically possible to remove all the wiring and keyswitch from the 703 but the results look jury rigged and its just to easy to purchase the correct parts. the key switch panalwillcontain the choke switch, keyswitch and E-stop switch. as wellas an alarm horn. the harness from the keyswitch willplug into the harness from the 704 that contains the trim switch and nutralstart switch. makes for a clean trouble free intsal that requires no splicing or thinking. its all plug and play. that 703 box new is about 400 dollars.

Re: What kind of control box for a Yamaha 90

Thanks a lot for the advice rodbolt. I have been going crazy looking on the net looking for an answer like that. I have figured out that I will need the 704, key switch, and wiring harness. The only thing I can’t find an answer to is where can I get a neutral throttle lever like the 703 has on it? Also, I see Yamaha outboard 10 pin main engine harness for sale that state they will work on any Yamaha motor over 30HP. Is this Yamaha 10 pin harness universal or is there a specific one that I need?

Re: What kind of control box for a Yamaha 90

hello
the 10 pin for the 704 is universal. fits all motors over about 30 hp that have remote. the 704 has a push button to allow for throttle only and contains a nutral start switch as well as trim in the handle if it was for a motor with trim. make sure you get the one for trim. the 704 was made with and without trim. the 704 can be set up to pull or push for throttle with relative ease and no further parts to buy.
