Hello there, I'm new to the whole boating thing, but couldnt resist a project I just got for free. Problem is, i know nothing about boat engines. Im posting some pics of the engine, so hopefully someone can identify it and send me in the right direction for a manual. I know its an OMC sterndrive, and it also says OMC cobra on the hydraulics that lift the prop up and down. anyone?

My guess would be that it is a OMC motor seeing that the sterndrive is OMC but what the hell do I know

Yea, 5.0 doesn't tell you much. ford and chevy both made one. If the distributor is in front it's a ford. back a chevy.

oh, i see it, it's in front. it probably is a 5.0 ford motor. if that's the case parts should be pretty easy to come by.

Not really...the manifolds will be a lot tougher to get if its a Ford.

Dennis Moore has universal center rise mans/risers for Ford......
I'd be way more worried about the three little letters......OMC.....:)

Because no Outdrive manufacturer builds their own gasoline engines . . . Volvo used to, but not anymore. They (Merc and Volvo) use exclusively GM now, but OMC and Merc used some Fords back in the day . . .

The only thing OMC/Merc/or Volvo is the outdrive itself. The motors are generally the same as a car motor just build with diferent materials and a few different parts. Don't get that confused with they are the same... Because they aren't. Just similar.

If it's '94 or newer it is acutally a Volvo Penta Cobra SX drive.
Volvo bought OMC and in '94 turned to the SX but still sold some with the OMC name on them.

I have twin '94 OMC/VP SX drives with Ford 5.0L and they have been just fine and there are plenty of parts available. Just see any VP dealer.

You can see the Cobra badge in the one picture. The shift bracket and starter selenoid look like Ford. It may be a 5.8.

Re: What kind of engine is this?

So, another question. The engine has been sitting exposed to the elements for I dont know how long. The top end is just sitting on it and is not bolted in, theres no carbureoter, and theres rust in the middle under where the top would go. Can I fix it? Ive heard of boats being sunk and then the engine fixed. Theoretically I could get my hands on a 5.0 liter mustang engine, would I be better off to replace it? p.s I really like to try and fix stuff.
