I have a 1990 225 johnson with power trim and tilt. Am completely new to boating, and the trim and tilt, which was working has stopped. Does the motor that actually moves the engine up and down required hyrdaulic or some other fluid? I believe the reservoir is empty, and I don't know what to refill it with. Please help quickly!! Thank you. - novice

You will want to use Tilt and trim fluid. You can pick it up at any dealer and sometimes Walmart. Raise the motor all the way and lock it into place. Remove the fill screw and top off the fluid. Replace the screw loosely and raise and lower the lower unit several times. Raise it up again and check the fluid. Top off as necessary. Do this a few times until you are sure it's full....The unit is self-bleeding...My question would be: Where did the fluid go if it's empty??

Possible you have an electrical problem. When you activate the shifter trim button, does the trim motor run at all?-in either the up or down position... Is the trim switch on the lower cowl also dead?
