Something that many don`t understand about spinning reels and line is this.
It depends on the size of the spool on the reel what # line you can use without tangles. If you have a 1000 series reel, floro over 4# is likly to cause problems where you could get away with 8# using a mono. A 10# braid or even heavier will work also because the braids are so limp. I have seen very few spinning reels unless they are saltwater size that will work well with 14# anything but braid. If you are going to cast heavy baits like a 1/4 to 1/2 oz jigs or spinnerbaits you might be alright, but if you try a weightless plastic you are going to have tangles. LIve and learn.
I have never had trouble with large mono on a spinning reel. I have had one spool filled with 6# and the other w/ 17 # for as long as I have ha the reel. The only issue I have had w/ the 17 is knots comin' untied. Then I changed to the palomar and all is well.
I've seen 14# mono leap off the spool at every opportunity and sometimes it lays there no problem. it never occured to me to put 17# on a spinning reel - kinda defeats the purpose of spinning which for me is to use lighter lures.
