What kind of motor did I buy?

I bought a motor yesterday that I was told is an Evinrude 18 hp. I looked everywhere on the motor and cannot find any numbers or markings except for "JAPAN" on the upper shaft. Does anyone recognize this motor? Can you confirm who made it and when?
Also, does anyone recognize the part in the last 2 pictures? What is this for? Mine seems to be loose or broken and I dont want to get a new one if it only pertains to the electric start or is something that doesn't really matter.
Also, any preventative care I should do or advice on maintaining this motor?

Thanks and happy boating!
DF

Re: What kind of motor did I buy?

check a little closer for the numbers, my old engines have em on the bracket.....

heres a lilnk to a PDF file that has all model years and hp IDd by the model # on the engine it will help you ID the YEAR of the motor.....

OR if you know the year and HP it will show you the model number/s for that year and HP

also the ID chart helps ID shaft length /model variation /and design features etc

Hmmm. I don't think that is an OMC. It kinda looks like a Nissan from the shape of the cover. It would make sense if you see JAPAN on it that is is a Nissan. Post some bigger pictures if you can.
