Completely gutting out this 1985 celebrity calais. 470 merc cruiser 3.7 170hp 224 cu in and alpha one outboard completely rebuilt, transom and stringers being replaced this week, seats rebuilt, vinyl sewn. Question is how do I know what kind of paint to use? Here's the current state and the new paint scheme I want. Thanks!

Going to be trailored and stored inside during winters. Reading others posts re: epoxy based or resin based, how do I know what kind I need?

Being fresh water trailered boat you could use enamel with hardener which is the least expensive or use 2 part epoxy or even automotive 2 part urathane . Then it gets real pricey like Imron and others ..
Gell coat is also good but can be a real challenge ..

For those colors, you need a paint system that can be tinted....any auto paint, or some marine topside paints

I know Awlgrip can be tinted,

How much paint do I need? Average cost in paint for this little 18 foot boat? Obviously weeks away from being able to paint it. Just like to plan ahead.

I'm currently painting my boat using Rustoleum tractor paint with a Majic catalyst hardener and it's going well so far (link in my forum post signature to my boat project, paint posts are on page 10)

Here's a link to Woodonglass's post regarding the technique and products, which is exactly what I'm following for my project https://forums.iboats.com/forum/boa...lamingo-splashed-w-pics?p=5172021#post5172021

I wanted to paint my top cap separately using Awlgrip but considering cost/time/ease I decided to just paint out my whole boat using the above method.

I have no clue, but wanted to say I love that color! If you have any left over, send it down here.

If youre gonna paint the exterior and interior in the purple, you will probably need a gallon, which will yield you about 5 qts ready to spray including reducer and activator...for the yellow, a qt will do

The purple color is a high pigment, so expect to pay the higher range of most brands

As an example, The Imron Scott mentioned is a high end paint...Higher pigmented colors will be from 500 to 800 per gallon.

Awlgrip will be probably be 300 to 500 per gallon, but Awlgrip is kinda difficult to apply cuz it goes on as sprayed, meaning you cant cut and buff it like a hybrid.

If you have PPG store near you, see if they have Delfeet Essential, which is similar to Imron (its competition), but much cheaper.because its a budget line of their Evolution Hybrid.

As for auto paints, Dupont, PPG, Sherman Williams, ect will have a budget line of their Acrylic Urethanes that will run under 300 per gallon, and spray easy, can be color sanded, and buffed.

BTW, that color on the bass boat looks like a pearl, so to achieve that exact look, some clear will need to be mixed with the final few coats, adding to the cost.

If your trying to spray a metallic urethane single stage paint it's very hard you will get zebra stripes
ive been an auto painter for 20+ years and it's still tough
Base coat/clearcoat with slow reducer will be much easier
Valspar makes a great urethane for under $150 gal with a qt of hardner after reduction it will yeild over 1 1/2 of ready to spray paint
It's comparable to imron or ppg dcc
I've used it in my son's car and it still looks great after a few years (black)

Auto clear doesnt hold up well on a boat, at least on a boat thats used....which is why Akso thrived with Awlgrip, and Dupont competed with Imron marine. Both are proprietary mixes, Awlgrip is a Linear Polyurethane, Imron is a Polyurethane Enamel hybrid. Both are single stage. Because Awlgrip isnt really repairable, they formulated Awlcraft2000, an acrylic Urethane, to target a larger market share.

Its because of the durability in harsh environments that Hatteras used Imron for their hulls, and Hinckley used Awlgrip, among others.

DCC Concept is also a single stage AU....My favorite paint..

Yup, metallic needs clear, and the flakes are alot smaller than what is used in the gel mold.

Thank you!! If you like color you should like the rebuilt engine:)

That is awesome! Purple has always been my favorite color. It would not work in the boat I am restoring, and I am not inclined to repaint my hull, but I am seriously considering replacing all my gauges with glowshift gauges just so I can have some purple in there somewhere!

Ppg concept DCC is indeed great paint
if you spray the black and buff it
Base/clear dosent even come close to shine and depth
Imron also has a few lines of paint under the name imron
There's industrial ,elite and marine
