What kind of resin?? is dark grey???

My boat has been redone before and a type of resin that dries med to dark grey was used. Any guesses as to what it is?

Polyesters can be almost any color, even without being tinted. What brand, size and year of boat is it.

It is a 1981 Campion Christina 180. The stringers and floor were ahem "repaired" about 7-8 years ago. I think the grey stuff is poly resin that was used in the repair?

Vintage also makes it polyester.

Its almost academic, though. I think if you want to make a real nice repair, you would use epoxy resin. Is that your plan?

I find epoxy is easier to work with since the mixing ratios are not so in favor of the resin. I have an easier time predicting pot life, and I find that experimenting with different fillers to make nice fillets is kind of fun.

The quality of the workmanship and how the glass is laid up is 100000x more important than epoxy/poly debate. Unless you are doing a small repair, epoxy is just too expensive for the average DYI (and IMHO the extra cost is not worth the added benefit). Work the polyester well and your repair should last 30+ years. Don't forget though... anything will fail (epoxy or poly) if routine maintenance isn't performed on the boat.

I am going to use epoxy. I just about have the materials list figured out. The original hull material almost looks like epoxy though, clear yellowish, but is almost certainly epoxy from what I can garner.

Clear yellowish will probably be Polyester Resin.
