I am getting ready to join cup and hull on my 16' BL. I found these on amazon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00137PWXY/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

made out per spec with Aluminum 5052.

Aluminum 5052

"5052 is one of the higher strength non-heat-treatable alloys. It has a high fatigue strength and is a good choice for structures subjected to excessive vibration. The alloy has excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine atmospheres. The formability of the grade is excellent and in the annealed condition it offers higher strengths than 1100 or 3003 grades."

So based on this it looks like a good choice.

Now, I've never used rivets and I read somewhere that if the blind side on the soft material (fiberglass) one should use washer also. Any ideas?

Re: What kind of rivets?

An expert once told me not to use rivets. They were Bayliner?s cheep solution. Get yourself some stainless steel screws with self locking nuts (the ones with the white rubber band attached) and use these instead. Yes, you need to use a washer inside. The stainless steel screws and the washer are much cheaper in your local hardware store than a marine store, specially Worst Marine. Just my 2 cents

Just make sure of your "grip" range.

If you can add a small washer It would be better if you can reach it ( 2 person job though :( ).

Personally I dont think the alum rivs are going to fail unless you Smack your Rub rail.

In SOME cases its better to have those alum rivs shear off then have SS Bolts ripping and tearing more glass than the impact would have done without them.

Keep us updated :) .

I used the double number of rivets initially put in, and sealed it with 3m 4200. If it held for 10 years with half the number of rivets and no sealant, it will last another 10 the way it is right now.
