What kind of sealant to use?

When I was ordering the parts to seal the gear case on my 3 hp Johnson 54 jw-10 the tech said not to forget to use sealant between the case and the seal itself. He was very busy so I didn?t get to ask him what kind to use. Is this like a loctite kind of stuff? Also this is the first time I?ve replaced seals. Is there an easier way to get the old ones out? I obviously did it the hard way. But I did finally get them out and w/out damage to the case. Thanks for your help. This site helped me do this impeller and reseal for around $40.00. Saving me $55.00 in labor.

Almost any gasket sealer is OK for using on the O.D. of the pressed-in seals.

There are such things of special seal puller tools. Since you don't have them, the hard way is the only way.
