what kind of tach do i need?35 h.p. johnson

i would like to put a tach on my boat with 35 h.p. johnson 1980 electric start.i was told that i would need a 10 pole 5 pulse tach.i searched the internet and ebay and saw alot of tachs that were adjustable with a swith on the back for diffrent poles ...but i didn,t see anything about 5 pulse.if i buy a marine tach that is good for 10 pole will that work fine?also i was told that i would have to buy some kind of wiring harness to connect the tach.do i have to buy a harness or can i just use standard wiring from a roll?
