What lower units will work on '86 30hp motor

The bearing carrier is stuck (saltwater) and if it damages the LU housing coming out, I need to know what different years will work for the Evinrude '86 30hp replacement. A flywheel puller just breaks the bolts. J-hooks would be the next choice. I am aware that the driveshaft lengths are different and can be changed for length differences.

I put a lot of heat on it and probably melted the rear seals. Should have just replaced the 2 back seals instead. Oh well.

I don't suppose a '79 35 hp johnson would work?

My only recommendation to you would be to call either a repair shop or dealer and ask them for the part number for the lower unit assembly. You may even be able to talk them into telling you what years are interchangeable for it and maybe their part numbers as well.

Have you tried looking up your motor by year and model number? Many time you can find a parts break-down that way.

What I had in mind was a used unit or case. $837 for a new one is more than twice what the motor is worth. I could sort through several years of motors but thought someone that works on them might know.

Basically, you need to find a mid to late 1980s lower unit (see below). It shouldn't be too hard to find. Other later model years may work as well, but you'll have to research that. I sometimes see used ones selling for $300+

20, 25, 30hp from 1985-1988.
35hp from 1986-1988.
