Hi All, I recently bought a 1995 StarCraft Islander with a 4.3lx merCruiser Alpha O-ne drive. I have had the boat out a few times and it seems to be running well. I was getting low temp readings so I replaced the thermostat. Looking at the old thermostat I saw the date stamped on it on it was ?95. I was still getting low temp readings so I replaced the temp sensor. I checked the new sensor?s ohm readings at different temps on the stove before I installed it and while running the motor. I?m now confident I?m getting good readings on the gauge and in a safe range. I?m thinking I will do some maintenance on the outdrive this fall. After seeing that the thermostat had never been replaced I?m thinking probably no other maintenance has been done. ( I was told the water pump was replaced before putting the boat up for sale.). My question is, what maintenance should I consider doing on a motor and drive of this age?

Do it all for peace of mind.
Oil, filter, spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, rotor, impeller, and drive lube.

Uni joint grease, gimbal bearing grease, alignment check. Check all anodes for condition and continuity. Very careful and close inspection of all rubber bellows. Check gimbal ring bolt tensions. I'd also pull the exhaust elbows and give then a thorough check. And the exhaust shutters while you're in there. Pull the prop and grease the prop shaft. Remove any fishing line while the prop is off.

I would highly suggest getting a "Mercruiser" service manual for it, all maintenance items are covered in there as well as any issues you may come across. A downloadable version is availiable on this website, if you ask kindly one of the more computer oriented people on here should be able to help you on that. They did with me and I have an entire service manual on my thumb drive to open and read when ever I need information.
