What manuals do you recomend if any for my motor? Model: 856X4L

I've found two different ones.

and then a cd-rom manaul.

Before I get a manual, what mainenence do you suggest for a new to me used motor? I don't think the previous owner did much maintenence.

Plugs, wires, and gearcase lube? Anything else? ANyone know what spark plugs? There are autolites and NGK's in there now, so I doubt they are the right ones. I plan on running some carb cleaner through the carbs and maybe some seafoam in a tank of gas and see how it runs before I pull off the carbs. I can't help but think that after all this time they are most likely dirty and need to be completely pulled off and gone through?

Where do I fill and drain the gearcase lube? I saw what appears to be a drain/fill plug up by the engine underneath the engine cover. Is that the right one? Or is it on the bottom half of the gearcase like the 84 merc that I have worked on?

It uses 50:1 oil mixture and any two-stroke outboard engine oil will work right?

THanks

I have found the Clymers manuals to be the best, and most recomended. A hard copy is getting hard to find though.

Plugs are Champion L18-V, I think they run better.

There should be lots of threads on the lower unit gear case lubing.
My book shows a drain in the bottom, and fill up by the cav plate toward the '''''''''''front and a vent to the rear of the fill. There is one screw not to touch on the side near the bottom. That has to do with the shifting.

Check the screen at the fuel pump for debris. That is where the fuel line attaches to the engine.

This engine starts the best if you put the throttle in fast idle position,
pump the bulb first of course, and press key in to set choke, and then start.
Try to keep revs down to about 1500 I am told. It will start real hard if you do not do this.

Check the insulation under the cowling. Most are gone, but if it is crumbling,
take it all out. It will choke your engine.

There are tons of threads for our engines. Shearch and read.

Good Luck,

Mike

I've searched lots for my engine and it seams hard to find anything. Maybe it would help if I know what years are practically the same? I know I see lots of 83 and 85's, but not many 84's.

I have to push the key in to set choke even though it is electric?

Thanks

Yea, to activate the electric choke solenoid, you push in on the key. You'll hear it click.

Change the plugs. but you don't have any replaceable spark plug wires. you have 2 control boxes and 3 coil packs that have the plug wires built onto them.

Gear case lube is changed at the bottom where you see a fill and a vent. The drain is all the way at the bottom.

Wouldn't hurt to replace the impeller while your at it. Mine went out on me the other day. It will help to have a 2nd person help you maneuver the lower unit back into place to line the splines up to get it back in.

I was also contemplating running some sea foam through the carbs. I've done it to all my fuel injected automobiles, but never to a carburated vehicle. I was thinking the easiest way might be to just put some in a small spray bottle, and lightly spray it into the carbs while its running, or suck it up through one of the vacuum lines.

I think 84/85 are similar. There are some changes in the ignition setup depending on the year.

THanks,

I figured out that choke thing by pushing on the key and observing what happends. I was going to ask about the plug wires.

I have 140-145 psi on all three cylinders on the compression tests, so I'm happy now.

Only problem left is the propeller issue.

Do you know if you can put on 15 tooth spline thru hub exaust propellers on? I don't see why you couldn't, but what do I know.

I found a working 1 piece lower unit for sale with a thru hub exaust propeller on a 1985 lower unit. So maybe you can?

The exhaust on mine comes out toward the top not at the prop.
