Many have advocated Marine Tex for such things. I have found it totally unsuitable. It is very hard to mix (5 to 1) in small quantities and it is very runny. One thing I have not tried is to mix in some cabosil, glass bubbles or micro fibers to make it a better putty.

I have always used thickened epoxy resin for such patches. With a 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 mixture it was always easier to mix up. The consistancy of the resin and the hardener made it easier to dose out. I think that thickened polyester resin, in small batches would be next to impossible.

I had great results using the standard Marine Tex (small 1 to 1 tubes) for small holes (ie: screw holes). It mixes up like the tube epoxy, and sets in 5 minutes. Make sure the hole is clean and dry, and sand it out a little, forming a V toward the center. The fix is permanant.

It's the 2oz. kit. I used it to patch the 900 holes in the back of the transom that were below the waterline as well as the screw hole I put in the bottom when I was installing my deck. It works great. You pour the catalyst from a little bottle right into the container and mix it up there. Have everything ready to go before you mix as it will kick pretty quickly. I used a popsicle stick to get it out of the tube and a plastic spreader to manipulate it on the hull.

This is a packaged kit similar to the JB weld kits. I found it at Wal Mart, Boaters World, Advance Auto and a few other places.
