What material to seal between plywood deck?

Hello Everyone,

I am in the process of redoing the floor in my 1981 Blue Fin. The oroginal floor was plywood covered with Vinyl. I will be doing the replacement similar. One problem I have been having is getting a clean edge between the different pieces of wood. This is because I am only redoing part of the floor as much of it is still solid.

I am thinking that I need a filler material to go between the sheets of wood. Something like a wood putty that will hold up to the shifting and bouncing of the floor as well as getting wet. I was thinking a putty epoxy would do the job but thought I would ask here first and see if there are any recommended products.

I used a glazing filler to do this same thing when we redid our kitchen but I doubt that material would hold up that well under a marine enviornment.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Erik

Marine tex will hold up and do the job...... or mix up some epoxy to a peanut butter state and use that.

Erik, you can fill any voids with marine poly putty. it is completely waterproof when cured. Did the original plywood decking have fiberglass over it? if so, you will want to grind down the original deck to bare wood, around the repaired area. Then lay poly resin-saturated cloth over the new plywood and bare wood of the original floor. This will tie them together. Did you inspect the stringers and frames? You do not want rotted structural components under that new floor.

Someone suggested PL.. if its good enough for the stringers why not use it for the deck..

i think i am leaning towards it..

i mixed PT sawdust with Poly resin to a peanutbutter consistancy, the sawdust absorbed the resin and made a nice fill. smeared it in good, allowed to dry then sanded. Glassed over that.

it worked well and I cant think of any potential problems. Any input?

im mot sure where you are talking about????

are you meaning on the butt joint of the plywood?......search peanut butter !....the pl will work....but it has to cure before you glass it.

HOWEVER>>>>>>if you mean that you are laying a new peice of plywood over an old one.........dont do it....!....it will rot out your boat.....

trar the old rotten wood out....and replace with a new peice.......you can just replace to the "infected area".....but dry the rest of the deck wood out thourghly with a fan.

cheers

oops,

Only the wood in the back of the boat was rotten. I tore all that out and have the new wood ready to put in. The origional floor was/is 5/8" plywood that was not glassed on either side. All I am doing is tearing out the rotten pieces and putting new wood in. I am looking for a product to use to make the joints between the wood disappear.

Hope this explains what I am doing. :)

Chris,

This is an aluminum boat. Everything under the plywood floor is aluminum, so no worries about rot. :)

I nice roofing trick I use when getting odd shaped plywood to be seemless if to overlap the pieces of wood (cut them too big, so they overlap) and saw both pieces at once (on top of one another). This will provide a completely even 1/8" gap (the width of the saw blade) between the two.

That may work for you, then you can use putty or nearly anything to fill the 1/8" gap, even a sliver of wood from that same sheet.
