What mild roller camshaft would you suggest for use with roller lifters (and maybe roller rockers) in either a 355ci or 383ci small block chevy running the stock exhaust manifolds and risers through the transom exhaust?

My original motor is a '98 250HP 5.7L Vortec 2 barrel carb'd motor that blew a head gasket. I want to bump up the power slightly by going to a 4 barrel set up as well as a mild camshaft if possible on my next motor.

Thank you all!

Without modifing the vortec heads, you can not go much higher in lift. Can't go to 1:6 ratio rockers with stock cam. Dennis Moore recommends Crane Compu Cams 2031 and 2032. The 2031 is too close to stock specs to me. The 2032 is about a 25hp boost.

COMP CAMS MAGNUM ROCKER ARMS SBC SELF-ALIGN 1.5 1417-16 These will fit under valve cover and give a true 1:52 ratio. Just don't expect much, if any, hp gain.

Would either one of the camshaft choices you listed work with stock exhaust set-up through the transom?

I know based on my reading that the Vortec heads are good for up to .475" lift give or take a little without machine work.

Thanks

The 2032 has 0.465 lift on exhaust, which does give you a slight safety margin. Both work with stock exhaust.

Do you know what the stock camshaft lift specifications are? My #24 MerCruiser service manual doesn't tell. It has measurements using different specifications.

Thanks
