what motor to buy???

Anyone have some advice on which motor I should look at to repower my 20' dual console fishing boat. The boat currently has dual johnson 50hp 2 strokes, but seeems underpowered. These motors are loud, polluting, unreliable, and unefficient. So I would like to improve in all categories, especially reliablity.<br /><br />What should I get. I know I want to go with a single outboard. Probably will get slightly used to save some cash. An Etec would be nice, but probably out of my price range. I have been looking at the yamaha 4 strokes. Hows the reliability and longetivity? How about the newer yamaha 2 strokes?<br /><br />What about the used outboards iboats sells? From guide services about a year or two old? Are they a good deal?<br /><br />thanks

I would try to go with a high tech.2 stroke.<br /> 4 strokes have just too many moving parts and require increased upkeep.<br />Keep in mind Evinrude has a deal for up to $1,000 off a purchase and that 7 year warranty<br />is sure tempting.Their infomercials are certainly impressive.<br /> Lots of folks have purchased fine motors here at iboats.

as you say an e-tec may be out of price range<br />you also mention polluting unreliable unefficent and loud therefore try to find a used evinrude d.i. 90 115 135 or 150 these motor address all your concerns<br />keeping in mind they are lower maintence then 4- strokes.<br />also you may be able to use existing control cables etc for single engine.<br />any used motor (or new) could be good or bad the difference is when it breaks who pays to fix it

Go for at least a 150. Any of the V4s won't do much more than your twin 50s.

bbbbzzzzzttttt. wrong<br /><br />a single 115 v4 evinrude will BLOW those twin fifty's outa the water. less weight, less drag in the water and the simplicity and longetivity of the omc v4 design make it a excellent canidate. heck, even a 90hp v4 evinrude would be an improvemnet i bet, simply just cause of the less weight and less drag.<br /><br />perfect, just like this one....<br /> http://www.boatmotors.com/motorparts/index.cgi?pid=4320&flag=2

thanks for the replies. How many years or hours of trouble free use can I expect to get out of a slightly used( probably 3 yr old) johnson or yamaha ~130hp outboard?<br /><br />Or should I just keep saving and buy a etec or 4stroke next year?<br /><br />thanks

I have a 130hp 1995 evinrude that i would sell. I bought it for one of my boats, but I noticed today that the hull is split and I dont want to fix it.

Hi,<br />I use a Yamaha F115 4-stroke. It has been available from 1999* so You should be able to find one second hand. I have used mine (2003) 2 seasons and I like it alot. I use on a 19 ft bowrider/DC type boat. 39 knots top speed and comfortable cruise speed at about 25 knots.<br /><br />Suzuki DF115 or DF140 4-strokes has been on the market for some years also now and they are very good so I would check out second hand prices on them also (Johnson 4-strokes are the same as Suzuki but painted white so have a look at them also). Mercury F115 EFI 4-stroke is also good, has been on the market for some years now.<br /><br />If You want to contribute to less pulution in the water etc try to find a second hand outboard that is at least CARB 2-star rated (but 3-star is avaliable now also) - no old 2-stroke without DFI (Direct Fuel Injection) meet these star ratings (as much as 30% of fuel goes unburned trough an old technology 2-stroke outboard).<br /><br /><br />* Yamaha F115 4-stroke first came out on the market in october 1999 so it has been on the market for many years and is proven to be a reliable outboard. For 2004 it was made CARB 3-star rated (only 2-star rated before). I do not know what has been enhanced over the years since it came out - only thing I know is the "decals" was changed to 2002 season, new "facelift" to the right below.<br /><br />

bo is almost correct but the carb ratings are for air pollution not water<br />but i think your best bet is to save your money up and get an e-tec <br />new e-tec modles are coming on line quickly the 115 has just been released dealers should start to see them in june others will follow.<br />one of the many advantages to new evinrudes is the warranty!

Hi,<br />If You plan to do all maintenance Yourself a 2-stroke is easier to work on.<br />It is more moving parts in a 4-stroke and also more electrical things usually, so that is slight negative thing compared to old technology 2-stroke. The new technology 2-strokes (Mercury Optimax, Evinrude E-tech, Yamaha HPDI) with Direct Fuel Injection has also many electronic "boxes" in them that in future can be a maintenance issue or cause trouble (but let's hope not).<br /><br />I have good experience so far with my Yamaha F115 4-stroke (had 2-stroke before).<br /><br />Hard to beat the 7 year "engine protection" on Evinrude E-tech but You have to wait for the 115 hp E-tech. But I have 5 year "warranty" on my Yamaha F115 since I have the Y.E.S. also.

Tony,<br /><br />I have nothing but good things to say about the F115 yamaha. quiet, smooth, economical etc. I personally don't think maintaince is a big deal. The oil changes are easy. <br /><br />A 115 on a 20' foot boat doesn't seem like enough to me. Hope you find a good deal out there, lots of good motors.

I have a 19 ft bowrider/DC type boat with my Yamaha F115 - absolutely no problem. But the hull is very well designed and the boat has rather low resistance in the water and has 21 degrees V shape at transom (that has more V shape in front of course).<br /><br />On a 20 ft dual console fishing boat a 115 hp 4- or 2-stroke should be enough for normal use, but if the boat is usually heavy loaded (for example many persons onboard) it is good to have extra power and maybe 140-150 hk (like a Suzuki DF 140 4-stroke) could be better.<br /><br />tonyscj5, what boat (make and model) do You have?
