What Motor?

I have recently purchase a 16' plywood boat with an unidentified outboard motor. I believe from its general shape that it is a Johnson and possibly 40hp. It is ex MOD (UK) and has had all identifying plates removed except for one on the right side below the cowling with the number 320715. The number 323005 is stamped on the engine near the carb and 373037 on the carb itself.<br /><br />I know it is a long shot but has anyone any idea of its age and capacity?

My guess is, you have a 1970's model OMC 25 or 35hp.

The impeller on this engine is leaking so I took the base of the engine to a local dealer who thought it was pre 1969 (Probably a 1965 40HP). The reason he thought this was that the impeller is housed in a cup in the shaft rather than on a flat plate. <br /><br />The dealer said that this was not a very successful design and the engine is quite rare. He did not think it would be possible to get a new pump. Telephoning another dealer he said the pumps are fairly standard and a relacement would be no problem. <br /><br />I don't want to end up buying a replacement that will not fit so any advice would be appreciated.

The dealer is full of you know what. That ignition system you have on there didn't come out until I belive 1975. And didn't thru-hub exhaust appear on the 40hp in '76?<br />The rounded rubber mount housings on the exhaust housing look more like a 40hp lower than a 18-25hp lower.
