What new motor would you buy ?

Looking to repower 1989 blusfin sportsman aluminum v it has 90 hp capacity I would like to keep weight down with a 2 stroke. Found a 90 hp new yamaha with carbs. What do you think ? Changing controls not a problem . Old anyway. I would like to be able to service it myself as much as possible.

if your intending on doing the work yourself, i prefer carbs, that said EFI 2 STROKES have a lot going for them. can you easily get parts for the yamaha, and service should things go beyond your expertise?

Alot to think about. I believe the simpler the better. Affraid of the horror stories of complex eletronics ,computers . yamaha dealer is furthur then merc. and etec. I wonder will parts for 90 hp carborated yamaha motor will be available in the next 10 years ? My skills are limited but learning.

From what I hear Yamaha's don't ever break down so I wouldn't worry about parts.
Since Yamaha doesn't make 2-strokes anymore then what's out there in parts is all that will ever be. I imagine you will be able to get parts for that motor for many many years but the rarer they get the higher they are going to cost.

I think the new yamaha with carbs would be the ideal motor for your boat, and don't think you'll have any parts problems for the next 20 years or so, since they sold so many of them. However, since the motor is probably going to last longer than 20years if you take care of it, I guess in 20 years you may have a parts problem.
Anyway, the motor you mentioned is the exact motor I would choose for your boat or any other boat rated for 90hp, even if I were a millionaire and the high-dollar Fuel injected motors were chickenfeed to me.
Good motor, anyone can work on it.

LOL,

18HP techumseh electric start bolted onto some generic johnnyrude gearcase. That's my dream engine. No water pump, no oil mix, no marina, no dealer, no parts, no service, no breaking. maybe every 4-5 years I'll pick up a new air filter at home depot and change the oil. I wouldn't need to worry about parts or manuals or anything. if it acts up then just find a cheap riding lawnmower on craigslist and swap out the engines.

I just fish. no need to tow a skier or impress the neighbors.

go carbbed...they can take every outboard fuel injector in the whole world and find somewhere to stick them, I do not know why but fuel injectors and outboard motors are not a good mix.

I agree the technology is a little scary;but the Etec has been out for 7 years and to this point I haven't heard any horror stories. Granted your not likely to fix much yourself but no maintenance for 3 years anyway.

no maintenance unless something goes wrong..I got a friend who has a 2008 150 Yamaha 4 stroke that has been at dealers now for 11 weeks and they flew in a factory tech..it still is not fixed...I am not sure if e-tec is any better but when you figure in the original price of the motor then take a look at the parts list, and parts do break eventually...many parts on that e-tec $700 and up, could get pricey quick..plus you almost have to take it to a shop and pay $85+ per hour...carb motors are cheap and easy for a DIYer...beside I just am not convinced that EFI/computers/sensors are reliable in outboards yet...although they seem to be doing good in automobiles..it just makes me cringe to think of an injector leaning out from a clog and popping a piston on a $20K motor

I've had my Merc 60 EFI 4 stroke since 2001 and the only maintenance needed has been an annual oil change. After having the EFI, I sure wouldn't want to go back to carbs. I just wish my 9.9 kicker was EFI.

I bought my boat new in 1999 with a 90C Yamaha 2 stroke, carbed, pre-mix motor,and it's never broke, quit, or given me any trouble at all. Just do normal routine maintenance AND keep fresh, clean, stabilized gas in it, and it's about as bullet-proof as they get. My wife and I cruise on the Saint Johns River in Florida in April and I have to have a dependable motor. 90HP Yamy is about as good as they get in my experience. Good Luck!

I have owned Mercs, Evenrude, Yameys, and a couple of Hondas... with that said, yes, two strokes are lighter than a 4 stroke but for the dollar and not having to use 2 stroke oil, I would go with the 4 stroke Honda or Yamaha....
