What octane gas should I be running in a Yamaha 200 Saltwater series II V6? This is my brother’s boat and every time I go out I like to bring 20 gallons of fuel in jerry cans as a thanks for the invite. My question is with a carbed engine like this what is the advantage of 93 octane? They only sell 93 at the dock at around $2.85 a gallon. I can get 87 for $1.88 at the corner station.

Mac

The advantage of the 93 octane is that the marina operator gets an extra $0.97 per gallon out of you. Virtually all 2-strokes only need 87 octane.

you will get ignition problems un-noticeable by you if you use 87*ron. stick with at least 89 and everything will run a lot smoother. 87 will run your motor but wont handle any kind of heavy/heavier then normal load.

I agree with Rodbolt. If it wont run well on 87 there is something else wrong.

Good luck. :)

Thanks this boat is in tip top shape so I'll bring the 87. and since the dock only sells 93 we'll have somewhere just over 90. :)
MJ

I just can't do it. He wants the 93 in the tank so that is what I'll bring.

Mac

I would thank the motor is designed to 87oct, that certain plug, at that certain timing. ANything else and you are really playing engineer. To me it only makes since to run what the manufacturer suggest.
