I am also currently using Rotella Diesel oil, along with a shot of zinc enhancement, (as recommended by the shop that rebuilds the blocks for me) in anything new with flat tappets, for the initial break in period.
But I think, I am also going to change over to Rotella Diesel oil on all my boat engines as a permanent oil, I believe. Unless someone can convince me otherwise.
(none rollers, of course)

I did a LOT of reading and research... My conclusion... (Just putting it out there, not saying you should do this....) My conclusion was that the diesel engine oil should have better shear qualities and is designed to operate under harder working conditions than petrol engine oil.... So, the 'diesel engine' oil gets used in the boat....

Chris......

Not to take issue with a post from a couple weeks back, but it can be hazardous on an older motor to switch to the high detergent diesel oils from a relatively low detergent automotive oil. Problem is it will wash all the deposits out and you will have a problem on an older motor loosening everything up and falling apart.

New tight and clean motor is no problem. I use Chevron Delo in all my pickups tractors and farm equipment, gas or diesel. Mobile 1 in my Jeep and newer 8.1 Liter Chevy Pickup. And like you, have decades of experience doing it. Have had to repair a couple of blown up older engines in work trucks that mistakenly got switched to 15-40 diesel oil. Didn't take em long either.

Most anything will work if right temperature range for the viscosity and the engine is clean.

Hi Rick... Completely agree. And that's why all my engines get the diesel oil from the get-go (after run-in)....
