I have recently bought myself my first boat. It's 14', and made out of fibreglass. I need to buy an outboard for it but dont know what hp to go for. I want to use it for water sports, ie towing a ring and ski's, and genereal buzzing around.

Would 30 hp be too much or too little?

I don't know the make of the boat so im struggling to find out the manufacturer guidelines.

cheers

Is there an ID plate inside the boat somewhere that indicates what the maximum HP rating is. If you find one, you will want to power the boat with an engine that is at least 70 - 75% of the rating on that tag. Anything less than that will be a slug.

unless it is really light 30 will not be enough, a picture or more description would really help.

It really depends on the type of boat and hull. I have a '57 or '58 glasspar lido and an old johnson 33hp runs the boat at speeds of 25-27 mph. If it's a trihull, 30hp will likely be too little or bare minimum. year and model of boat will help. also if there is a uscg plate, you should power at least 75% of the rated max to be happy with the performance.

Cheers for the replys. I had a look round and could not find an ID/uscg plate on the boat anywhere. I'll post some pictures up so u can see what kind of boat it is. I'm having trouble identifying the make and model of it as it is.

thanks
