WHAT PAINT DO I PAINT A BOAT WITH?

I have painted cars in the past with everything from spray cans to air powered paint sprayers. My compressor recently crapped out on me though (wasn't oil drive).

I have never painted a boat before so I wonder what type of paint is used? Is it a latex based paint? Or is it a special marine paint?

DO THEY MAKE BOAT PAINT IN SPRAY CANS?

Boat paint as far as I know is not sold in the spray can. If you don't have a compressor you can roll and tip. If you do a search and you will find out what this means. Basically you roll the paint on then use a brush after to kill the roller marks. The paint that is used on most boats is polyurethane. There are many types and some are 1 part and some are two part like epoxy.
Search the Megamall and you will find lots of paint in a can. :)

Go to the marine paint manufacturers web sites (search google for marine paint). Most have step by step directions along with videos that can be purchased....

I have found that if you use an etching primer, you can then paint with automotive paint. The reason you use a special paint is because of the inability of alot of paints to stick to fiberglass. BUT if this is a boat that will be kept in saltwater you definitely want to go with a good antifouling paint for the bottom. But for the top you can do what I stated before. use about 3-5 coats light coats of primer, 4 coats of basecolor and another 4 coats of clearcoat. But make sure you sand well first to get a smooth base to paint over and then do your between coat sanding as well. A good paint job is very labor intensive, but well worth it in the long run.
Later,
P.S. It would be worth your time to rent a compressor and gravity feed spray gun. It will be extremely worth it. ;)
