My 30 year old fiberglass sailboat is starting to look a little worse for the wear, so I have decided to give it a paint job on the deck and cabin top (roll and tip method). need some suggestions as to what brand of paint you folks would suggest.. thanks in advance.

All the above are great. You can also use System Three www.systemthree.com. Their LPU is water based, easy to apply and durable. Price isn't too bad either.

Awl Grip is my choice but you better get ready for sticker shock. We just put another coat of primer on our hull yesterday (it finally got warm enough). I was hoping to put the first color coat on this weekend, but the weather gods aren't going to smile on us for that one.

Just to give you an idea on the cost of the stuff; a gallon of color, half gallon of converter, and a quart of reducer ran me right at $300. The primer was about half that much, but it mixes 1:1 for base paint and converter rather than 1:0.5. Reducer runs about $30 a quart and can be used up to about 25% of mixed volume. Look at the bright side though, it will last 10 years with a finish that shines better than new gel coat and you'll never have to wax the boat again.

Thom

Re: What paint to use?

Ryoken/Thomwv: I was afraid you were going to say that...Years ago I worked with imron at a boat dealersip, had all the equipment to spray it at the time but no more... I just can't justify spending that much dough on a gal of paint and not be able to apply it with a gun....also, don't plan on removing any deck hardware either, this one is gonna be quick and easy! no, I think I need to find something less expensive but still be a good value... I'm leaning toward interlux Toplac... single part poly... but i know nothing about it.. Tradin: what brand of interlux did you use? Dave: your web page is no good.. Thanks to all for the input.....

Flashback, on Dave's page link, just delete the period at the end (between the com and /).

I used the interlux and it looked great. I did notice that if it stays wet for a long period it will tend to get small bumps in the paint. They were larger where the carpet met the hull on the trailer. After 8 months it still looks good but next time i will try something else. Jason,Thanks for the tip on Dave's web page. I was able to view it after taking the period out. seems like some interesting paint, Dave F, have you used it? If so what did you use it on and how long ago.
Outrigger, which brand of interlux did you use?

Re: What paint to use?

flashback

I just built a boat and pretty much used System Three products exclusively for it. Web link for the boat http://bellsouthpwp.net/o/b/ob15/

The paint is pretty easy to work with. The epoxy primer is nice also. Again water based and cleanup is easy.

Has anyone tried West Marine brand one part poly? It's priced down with EasyPoxy and Brightsides.

Re: What paint to use?

Dave, Thanks for posting back, thats a real nice looking boat you put together. I've read about the stitch and glue method for several years and it has proven quite durable and economical. I may try the system 3 paint as i am looking for something that will last... I plan on keeping the boat the rest of my life and I am not so much concerned with looks as i am longevity........thanks for the info...

Re: What paint to use?

flashback ,

Good luck. You can order the paint from here http://www.boatbuildercentral.com/

Probably the best price around. The best part is the cleanup. Use at leat 3 coats of paint and it you can use the crosslinker for each coat. Adds durability. Fire me off an email if you have any questions.
