I have a 17 ft center console with a 1989 110HP johnson. It takes several seconds for it to plaine out. I want to put a 4 blade prop on it what is my best option. I want it to plain quickly but not lose any top in speed.

You'll probably get better replies to your question if you post it in the "Prop Questions and Topics" forum ... may a moderator will move it for you!

Question - going from a 3 blade to a 4 usually requires raising the motor for optimum results. Is that something you're comfortable with?

Re: What pitch and diameter prop?

To get a better hole shot (get on plane faster), a 4-blade is gonna help, but it is gonna cost you a little top end.

This is the never-ending dilemma.

However, if your current prop is of an older design and is a 3-blade, a modern 4-blade prop of the same pitch will give you great low-end bite for the hole shote, get you on plane faster, probably make mid-range performance better, and very nearly match the old-technology 3-blade prop in top end, although 4 blades are nearly always at a disadvantage in top end because more metal is slapping through the water causing drag.

Since so little of your time is spent near the top end, focus on getting on plane faster. Losing top end means 1-3 MPH. No big deal at all.

Several seconds to plane.can you be more specific. 5 to 10 seconds isn't excessive if you are also concerned about top end.
As suggested a 4 bld . will help hole shot. But we need a lot more info before
being able to make a suggestion.
Please read the stickies at the top of the page.
We need boat material, brand, weight, year,(if possible).Prop size usually on the barrel or under the prop nut.Present max rpm and speed.
Also your typical load and activities.

Re: What pitch and diameter prop?

Guys thanks for all the feed back. Currently I'm not sure of what the size or pitch my prop is. My boat is a 1984 Pro-Line 17 with a 1989 johnson 110. Estimated weight is 3000 lbs (subject to correction) My max rpm at wide open is 4700 which seams a little low to me. I don't think my carbs are opening all the way though if I adjust the linkage it idles too high. It does take about 15 seconds to plain out. Also if I'm going less than 20 MPH I can't keep it at plain. Max MPH is 33
