Also, not to be negative, always checking the gapping even on pre-gap plugs. I've had some incorrect gaps even on pre-gap

I always use champions but that is what is recommended in my owners handbook. Consequently I have stuck with that and had no issues so far.

Re: what plugs are best

does anyone on here run the surface gap i think its a ql16v?

ive seen the heat chart pages and read about the way they tested for proper heat ranges in different shapes of plugs at wot and at idle---the parts store that i shop at doesnt stock the surface gap champion so i bought l77jc4.

can anyone tell me if they have tried both? and if there where any differences at wot or idle?

thanks for the help!

Please don't hijack someone else's thread, David. When you post the new thread that your question demands, don't leave out the year and model engine you are talking about.

I was running NGK plugs (BZ7HS-10) for a little while on my '86 15Hp Johnson - They worked fine on the engine. I believe they are superior to Champions overall, but I was getting RF interference more using these plugs than with the Champion QL77JC4, so I switched back to Champions. My sounder and radio work better in my small boat with the Champions. The Champions were pre-gapped to 0.030. The NGK had a 0.040 gap which i had to re-gap down, out of the box.

The only reason i switched to begin with is because the Champions are hard to find in my area. I need to order them in.

Re: what plugs are best

You guys now have me thinking. I had Champions in the boat when I bought it in June but I took it to the mechanic I use. He indicated they were fouled and needed replacement. He used NGK premium plugs (don't know model but the proper NGK replacements) Boat runs fine but I noticed it sounds slightly different (not bad, just a different) but again I wasn't used to its sound prior to it as I only had it one wknd before.

However, I think in the spring I'm going back to the Champions. Seems to be a consensus across threads to stick to the Champions Johnson recommends.

Re: what plugs are best

hi 2all again, took boat out yesterday on d lake and had with me both NGK & CHAMPION plugs. After gapping both sets of plugs at manufactures specs & running motor for 15min intervals each time,i came 2 d conclusion that champions do perform better than the NGK'S on my particular motor & without any elecrical interference.Maybe sticking with manufacturers specs is ::Dd way 2 go.........CHEERS.
