I need to replace my prop on my 2003 40HP ELPTO Mercury... So I go online and see a dozen different props ranging from 7 pitch to 17...

How the heck do I know what pitch prop to get?!?

It's for a Tracker 175 PT 17 foot aluminum...

I'm confused!

what prop do you have on there now?
I would try something in the middle at first. maybe a 13.
I have a 17 0n my 70 hp engine.

I don't know what prop is on there now. Does it say on the prop what the pitch is?

The problem with "trying something in the middle" is that if i buy it online and try something in the middle and don't like it, then i have to spend another $125 for a different one. What if I don't like that one? Then I'm in another $125...

Is there a standard pitch?

no, there is no std pitch. It should be engraved ont he base of your current prop. There should be the diamater and a - and the pitch.

As suggested there is no standard size. The number will appear on the barrel of the prop usually near the base.Sometimes it appears under the prop nut.
If you know your present max rpm and speed it would aid in a selection.
Also this is the time to fine tune your prop to your typical load and activity.
