ya need to let everyone know what wot is with the throttle all the way open.... if what ya say is true. i'd guess (w/o knowing what yer wot is) ya need to go to a 21p... maybe even stainless steel.
if i remember right. that's a guess though, ya really need to test it @ wot. generally speaking, decreasing 1'' pitch in prop is worth a gain of 200 rpms. the same pitch prop aluminum vs. ss. is worth a decrease of 100 rpm for the ss version.

in my case, i run a 19p aluminum. i reach 4300 rpm with a normal load. when i got my boat it had a 21p on it, i could get about 3900 rpm. a little more if i trimmed it too high, higher than i wanted anyways (with the 19p aluminum i can get 4400 if i trim to high). i was on the low side for wot with the 21p, so i went down in pitch to gain rpm. i got the estimated 200 rpm per inch decrease in pitch. 21p=3900, 19p=4300. i think i could go to a 19p ss which should bring me to 4200. then i probably could over trim it up and still get my 4300. but since i'm not going to the races i leave it as is. in our case, we have the o ring grove in our lower drive shaft. they commonly break there and a ss prop is less tolerant to a prop strike and transfers the energy into the drive parts as opposed to breaking of a blade of the prop. so i leave it as is. ya want to be on the high side. lugging yer engine isn't good for it. now, let the real prop experts answer your question.... :)

edit... two threads about the same thing... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=285248

As suggested do a wot run.It won't hurt the motor to take it up long enough the get a good reading.

Re: what prop to use

what is the max suggested rpm's for that engine?
just knowing that you have a 6 cyl on a 19 ft boat, a 19' pitch seems a little small to me. That engine has some real power.

Re: what prop to use

i think i'd confirm that tach reading with a shop tach.....
man, them L6's are pretty wound up at 4300, but 5500 w/19p prop? what kinda speed (gps) ya getting? maybe plug into a prop caluculator... there must be a post of one here somewhere... yer mercruiser manual has a general prop application chart in the specifications section too i believe.....

prop caculator.... http://www.csgnetwork.com/marinepropcalc.html

it probably isn't right....
the unknown is the prop slip usually. apparently 10% is considered around normal. per this artical... http://www.kencook.net/Setupart.html
there are other articicals written too. google prop slip...
when i plug into the calculator, i get 10.4%.....
also wonder about your gear ratio at 2:1... my 165 is 1.65:1

my boat does 42mph gps, wot is 4300, 19p prop... plug in to find slip....
i'm thinking somethings amiss in your fact part of the equation... starting with the gear ratio + the 5500-5800 rpm.... your unknown at this point is prop slip and mph. you need to find out your mph (gps) + confirm your wot rpm...

yes my gear ratio is 1.65 so what would me to have so much speed? i know i have a 19p prop and my gear ratio is 1.65 and i can run her up to 5500 at wot but why?

Re: what prop to use

i still think ya should double check your tach that reads 5500 against a shop tach. i'm thinking 5500 would be to wound up too. and since they seem like there really wound up at 4300. i wonder if your really seeing 5500. a alternate tach might confirm your readings...

Re: what prop to use

changed from 19 pitch to a 21 pitch prop and now i run about the same speed which is 46.6 mph wot at 4300 rpm how is that posible. that what the math equates to also . 4300 rpm gear 1.65 21pitch prop 10% prop slip = 46.6 mph. ?

Re: what prop to use

Well it would appear your 19 was too small. It also appears the tach is accurate.Perhaps the 19 was tired.Props do wear out. You might measure the diameter.
