What RPM should I run my boat at?

This is probably a loaded question but lets assume just running from point a to point b, not worried about top speed but what is best for the engine. Lets assume calm waters too.

My setup is a Bayliner 2052 Capri Cuddy, 4.3L (262) 185HP, Alpha 1 Gen 2 sterndrive, 19 pitch 3 blade prop. WOT is rated at 4400-4800 RPM.

The other weekend I was running 33-34MPH (not GPS measured) at 4100RPMs.

I assume it is not wise to run the boat at WOT all the time so I am looking for a general rule as to what is the ideal RPMs to run at when running 10-20 miles up and down the lake.

Is there a % of WOT one should run at to get the best life out of your engine? I know inboard/outboard are different than outboards so lets focus on inboard/outboards.

Thanks for any advice/criticism.

Hey Jason,

A real quick guide to the "sweet spot" - if you will. Get her up on plane. Trim it out for your optimum running then just start to throttle back. What you're looking for is the boat's ability to stay in that configuration using the least amount of rpm's possible.
Now, the worst thing you could do would be to have the bow really high - that's pushing the boat and extremely hard on the motor ( not to mention your fuel consumption ).
Don't even look at your tach - use your ears. Your motor will tell you when it's happy. :D
Do remember that with extra weight onboard you will need to push her a little harder to keep on plane. But then again, it's all relevant isn't it ?

I dont know what youre "supposed" to do, but if i know im going on a fairly long ride, Ill keep it around 3500 rpms. ill make short, fast blasts at 4000 rpms and above, but i dont keep it continous like that. I hear people say its fine to run it wide open like that, Im just overly cautious I guess.

optimium rpms for io's is 3000 rpms, for cruising. trim out, adjust throttle to 3000.just don't plow.waste gas.
