What RPM should my 92 60 HP Evinrude run at?

I have a 92 60 HP Evinrude which I took out for the first time last week. In full throttle, it was reading beyond 8000 RPM's at about 35 mph. I thought this was strange. I'm questioning if the gauge is out.
How else can I verify if this is truly the correct RPM? What is the full open RPM for this motor.

sounds like the tach is off. should run 5500-6000.

Your powerpack is supposed to have a rev limit of 6700 - check the part number on the pack.

You most likely have your dial set incorrectly on the back of the gauge. It should be on 6p.
