What rpms do you run at?

Question: What rpms do you run the majority of the time when you run your motor at, in relationship to your WOT setting? I ask because it seems like that my particular motor (3.0 OMC) likes to run around 3600rpms. Which is about 26-27 mph? If I run around the 4000 rpm range it seems like it is really wound tight. Does this seem like a fair assumption?

Hi, I have a 3.0L mercruiser with a 19 pitch prop. My motor also cruises at 3600 rpm @ 30 mph.
The max rpm range for these motors is 4600 rpm. Mine goes to 4400 rpm, and sounds wound up also.
I'd say your boat is running fine. :)

You Should be Able to pull the Listed WOT,
With a Near normal, or slightly lighter Load.....
But,
Time spent At WOT,
Should be Short.......

Most motors are Very Comfortable in the 3200 to 3600rpm range..........
Most Efficent Too......

My motor runs about 135hrs a year........
90% is at Idle, or Just Cracked.......
9% is in the range above........
1% is WOT......

Yes,
I'm a Troller............. :D

Re: What rpms do you run at?

I have a 3.0, 14X19 prop. I'm definitely in no hurry to get anywhere on my boat, I enjoy being out there. That said, I spend a lot of time at 3000-3200, about 21-24mph. If I'm in more of a hurry (sun going down, wifey is cold, etc) I will buzz along at 3800-4000, about 30-32mph. I see 37-40 mph WOT, 4600RPM, but I rarely ever use it. I don't see the point, twice the fuel, twice the wear, for another few MPH? No thanks.

I'm actually thinking about going to a 21P prop, or at least trying one out. When I first went to the 19 I was a little upset about losing the good holeshot I had with my 17, but I got over that quick. My boat still barely raises it's bow at all, its hard to tell the transition to plane sometimes, and I have no tabs or hydrofoil. Just lucky. If I can get 4200RPM or more at WOT with a 21 I think I might use it to save some gas (faster cruise at the same RPM over the 19)...

Re: What rpms do you run at?

I run a 21p Quicksilver Mirage, nice prop for my boat ( wellcraft 196 eclipse merc 350 mag) I mostly cruise at between 2500 to 3600 rpm, at 2800 I'm moving at 25 to 28 mph on GPS at 3600 rpm I'm at 38 to 42 mph, speed varies if water is flat I get the slower speed at the given rpm, 1 or 2 foot chop I get more air under the boat and get higher speeds at same rpm, WOT will make your lips flap at 4600 and 60+, I just chaneged intake and Carb, my cruise speeds did not change, but holeshot and topend greatly improved.
