What Ship did you serve on?

I wear a baseball cap quite often. Recently the wife and I were shopping at walmart and the cashier (young man obviously of high school age) asked me

"What Ship did you serve on?" I looked at him with a simple puzzled look and glanced at my wife who had the same look....... he asked again "What Ship did you serve on?"

I told him I did not serve on any ship....... I asked why? He pointed to my baseball cap and said "well your hat says Retired U.S. Army...." then the young man realized the error

We all laughed a bit then in effort to save face the woung man asked "drive a tank?" I smiled and said ........ "no, I drive a Toyota! and I am an engineer!"

The poor kid looked sheepish when we left. I was happy that he was able to converse at all....most walmart cahiers are rather quietly concentrating on the task at hand.
