What should a boat inspection/survey include?

my last engine on my Maxum 2300sc seized water so that was a bit of a nightmare for us. I had a reman engine with 3yr warranty put in that buys us some piece of mind for the next few years. While I am building some knowledge about boat engines and boats (about 3yrs boating power and sailing experience) I feel the itch to upgrade to a larger power boat. My question is when I get a new boat, what should the professional inspection/survey include, specifically also related to the engine, compression, manifolds, outdrive etc..the boat would probably be a 25-28ft cabin cruiser/water sport boat...

Not sure that type of boat exists. Maybe a go-fast type boat with a cuddy, but not in a high freeboard express cruiser.

This will answer a few of your survey questions, but not all.

your probably right but the the post was mostly about items to inspect on the boat and it's engine since that's the more sensitive piece on the boat...we may also just keep the current one and buy a second...

Marine surveys entail a visual inspection, haul out (if it's berthed in the water), electrical inspection (batteries, bonding/grounding, corrosion, etc), systems operation checks, hull sounding, and performance test, among other items.

A detailed engine inspection is also available, but usually at an additional cost. Mine included all cylinder compression testing, leakdown test, fuel pressure test (EFI), and engine oil analysis. I had both engines and the genset tested. I think I paid in the neighbothood of an additional $150 per engine.

Get online and look up the surveryors sites and see what's included in their inspections. A few dollars now can save you thousands later.
