What should I offer?

I recently posted a question due to the fact that my 1975 Johnson Outboard was slipping out of forward gear. I have come to the conclusion that this is approx. a $300 to $400 repair with the local mechanic. The engine runs well, but is still a 1975. The local guy here, who seems pretty honest (runs a small shop) has a few newer outboards on display that he is trying to sell for customers. I inquired about a 1988-1989 25hp Honda Outboard whcih he has. He said the owner is asking $2,500 for it. The shop owner said to make an offer and he would take my 1975 Johnson on trade as part of the deal. The motor looks "real" clean and would be a step up from what I have. I thought offering $1,300 cash and my Johnson motor. Does this seem in the right ball park for this? The Honda is electric start and would come with all the controls as does my Johnson. Thanks for any input.....

That's more than the Honda sold for new back then. It's worth about $500.00 now...Or whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Guru is right, they are on glue!
You can buy a brand new 2009 25 Tohatsu for not allot more. That said, here are my $ thoughts.

Your75' with gear issues is worth $150-$250 tops. Fix it and you might get $350-$400.
The honda is 21+ years old. I wouldn't pay over $800 if it were spotless. Shop craigslist and see what outboards in your area are going for. I'd be surprised if you had to break $1300 to get a beauty of 1990's/2000's vintage.

yep someone is smoking some illegal happy drugs to be selling that motor for that. Fix the 75 its not much and you can do it your self for much less.

My bad....I spoke with the guy from the shop again and found out that the Honda motor I was inquring about is actually a 2001 (25hp) short shaft, electric start with cables/controls ect...I kinda went back and forth with them and they are saying they would take $1,800 for the motor. The mechanic at the shop was pretty much right on saying my Johnson was only worth $150-$200 as it sits...I thought of trading in my 25hp Johnson and giving $1,600 cash? Sound like a decent deal all around? Thanks again...
