Re: What should I repower with??

but i think the gearing is different between the 4.3 drive and the 350 drive....can anyone confirm this?

Ayuh,... That'd be Correct,.... It'd take a Monster of a prop to overcome the difference...

Re: What should I repower with??

i think merc 4.3 was 1.84? im digging out my manual for the yami to see if it might say...

if i can use a 350 i pretty much would have the boat i want for right now...b/c i know what i have in it, and dont wanna buy someone elses problems...yet

ive put alot of time and money in it and have a hard time selling it b/c i dont think i would get much with it having that yamaha...unless its someone that didnt do their research before they bought it like me.

if someone can please confirm if the v6 drive will work with a 350, please post...im doing some research now.

It's a Yamaha,..... Get it running,+ SELL it.....

Put a $200. U-Pick motor out of a pickup of the proper Vintage into it,+ SELL it...

Ayuh,... Both Stripped to the "Long Block" configuration,+ reassembled with the Yamaha components, Yes...

Btw,... Vintage is Very Important, mileage is Not...

The 4.3 did change several times in the mid 90s, so you definitely want to be sure of what your getting. There is a difference with balance shafts and timing covers, and I think there is a change from a two piece to one piece rear main seal as well.

You'll ideally want to pull the heads and freeze plugs out as well, and replace them with the proper marine gaskets and brass plugs. I'd also probably consider using the marine cam instead of the truck cam if at all possible.

Re: What should I repower with??

Okay, to answer a couple of your questions:

Yes, a 350 would work, with some re-proping, however, you need to factor in the cost of the manifolds. You cannot use you're 4.3 exhaust manifolds on the 350, so you would have to factor in the cost of replacements.

The most desirable truck 4.3's are 1996 to 2001, because of their cam's and their balance shafts. Having said that, if you don't go with the same generation as what you have, some of your stuff may not bolt up.

For example, the 4.3 came with regular heads and "vortec" heads. while both engines had the "vortec" name on them, only those made after a certain date (1995 I think) had vortec heads.

The vortec heads give you better torque, HP and fuel efficiency, all things being equal, you WANT vortec heads. Problem is, vortec heads have a different intake manifold bolt patter. So if your old heads were non vortec, and your new heads are vortec, than you will need a new intake manifold.

Also, the bolt pattern for the oil pans has changed as well over the years. I'm actually running a 4x4 truck cast aluminum oil pan in my boat because my stamped steal marine oil pan would not bolt up to my newer 4.3.

If a guy in this forum with that many posts is telling you to sell the boat because it's got a yamaha leg, I'd do it. Used boat ownership is all about cost of ownership, and I think the point he's trying to make is that the Alpha's are much much cheaper to own.

Might make more sense for you to swap the correct 4.3 in and sell it. If your existing engine doesn't have vortec heads, than you may have to source and older 4.3 truck engine, and it may be harder to find with with low milage.

Re: What should I repower with??

2 cents from another yamaha sterndrive owner. I ahve collected parts have a couple of extra legs etc. i know this thing fairly well. The 4.3 leg is geared toatlly different than the 5.7 leg, so youu would have some problems with this 1:1.5 is the gearing on the 5.7.

And all that being said, even though it was the best outdrive made, really simple, no impellers, run without grease, SELL IT while you can, parts are only used crap on ebay nowadays, I bought out a marina worth of parts back a couple of years ago and i'm ready to finally gove up the ghost.
