My engine runs with intermittent performance. I can’t seem to find the exact component at fault. I only have the funding for one component. So what do you guys think I should try first, stator or trigger plate? Thanks.

Sorry, it’s an 80's model 90Hp 2c6cyl. I'm not sure of the date but I do have a serial number: 06514885. And I tried the links to find the year but was unsuccessful. Do you guys know how to find the year of my engine?

Its a 1984 engine, don't try to change parts thats to costly. If you can come up with a OHM meter or DVA we can help you test the system and even if you can't do that at lest tell us which cyls. don't fire and that will give a good idea of the problem

Get a spark gap tester at your local auto parts store, it is less than 10.00 and will give a better indication of where to go from there. A DVA will also come in handy in determining the well being of the stator. I just went through the diagnosis and subsequent replacement of my stator as well.

Thanks phatmanmike, i actuly already have one. and i ran all of the tests that i could. seems its the stator that has a thermal problem. but there was a time that i ran the tests and all components checked out ok. but i think the wire inside the stator is just slightly broken and sometimes its ok and other times it doesnt make a connection. so i ran the test once on a cool night (ok) and then the next day in 90 degree weather (failed)

The last thing you want to do . Is to start replaceing parts in order to repair a outboard. You can sink many $$$ and still have the same thing. You should find what you need first. Then replace parts.
