What should it cost to rebuild 1967 Mercury model 110 9.8 hp?

Hi,

I'm fairly new to boat motors and was quoted $800 (parts & labor) to rebuild my 1967 110 that I bought last year. This quote is from a mobile marine service that will be driving at least an hour and doing the work on site at my home that day. Includes, new rings, cylinder hone, carb rebuild, all new seals. Is this a fair price or am I getting it in the keister? Thanks

Since after the rebuild the motor will still only be worth about $300, you'd be giving it to yourself in the keister.

Seriously,
Even after the powerhead re-ring (what you describe is not a full rebuild), you're still going to have a lower unit that may not be any good as far as drive shaft and seals, etc. '67 drive shafts were mild steel on mercs, not stainless, and prone to pitting, besided getting grooved seal areas like every other older motor.

I would never spend that kind of money on a 9.8hp merc from '67 unless it has some kind of sentimental value beyond all reason.

Otherwise, $800 is on the high side for what you describe, but seeing how he's mobile and such........ not too unreasonable.

Just my opinion,

I agree - I would never spend that much on a 45 year old motor unless it was going to be a showpiece. Is your motor blown? Does it really NEED that much work? Unless it is worn out, most old motors do quite well with basic maintenance and tune-up stuff. As JBJ pointed out, the shafts on those 1960s Mercs are prone to rusting, particularly at the seal below the waterpump housing, so that would be something to have checked...
