We are going to purchase a pontoon, we are considering a 20' and a 25', about 60% of the time it will be the Wife and I (total 2), 10% Wife, 2 daughters and I (total 4)and 10% wife, 4 daughters and I (total 6) who knows the other 20% of the time it could be up to 10 people on board. Questions it a lot harder to tow and launch a 25' over 20'? If you have a 20' do you wish you had bought bigger and if you have a 24 or 25 do you widh you had bought smaller and why. You input is appreciated. Thanks

Re: What siz pontoon 20' or 25'

Hi welcome to Iboats, I currently have a 20' and wish I had a 22' so I could have a few options that will not fit on the 20, I have had 10 people on my boat before but it obviously depends on the layout, as far as launching I do not feel it would be any harder to launch a bigger boat

good luck Ron

For more than 5 total, I would go bigger than 20'. I have a 20" and for my wife and I and another couple it's great. I've had 10 on board and I would say I was close to overload (minimum speed with no waves only). If you'll be having more than 4 adults regularly go with a 22' or 25'. Also go with a 90 hp or bigger.

I have a 25'er that has a capacity of 17. Many times it is just my wife and I and I never think of it being too big. I only tow it twice a year, but overall it is not too bad getting it on the trailer. I would think your storage situation would be more the determiner..

You'll never regret having too much space. But you may regret not having enough.

go with the larger size if you can store it, extra space is rarely an inconvenience however wishing you had a lil more size is a great inconvenience!

I was thinking the same thing.

What will you be towing it with? How far is the tow?

A longer pontoon will have increased costs with it as well.

We have a Suntracker PB 20 and it handles 6 adults well. Throw in a folding chair and 7 adults is good too. More than that it starts to get cozy, but we cruise out on the lake and either ground it and fish/swim or drop anchor and fish/swim so 7 hasn't been a problem, yet. 8 is too many for us though if we want to cruise the lake.

I have a 25' and love it. The great thing is I never have to say sorry there is no room. I have had 12 people and still cruise at 24mph wot. Times when there are only 3 or 4 of us everyone has a spot to stretch out and the little one has a big runway for jumping off the front.
I have no problem controlling her but in heavy wind things get a little tense when docking.

We have a 24 footer and LOVE it! It has plenty of room...no furniture, but portable chairs, and PLENTY of room for moving around and fishing without being on top of each other. We have only had it out twice, since we just got it, but I see a LOT of trips to the river this summer with friends and family! We tow ours as well, as there are no marinas near us, and it tows just fine, just have to get used to the length......

We have a 24 ft'er and it tows very well. Most of the time it's just the two of us but some times we may have as many a five. It really all depends on where you use it. I go in the upper waters of the Chesapecke Bay. So the bigger the better. I have friend of mine who has a 20 ft'er with a fifty Hp motor and on the weekends he's always having problem in the deeper water with all the traffic. while I'm just cruisin along with my 90 hp.I don't think they make a too bigger Pontoon boat.

You will appreciate the larger toon on bigger, rougher water, but you will need a vehicle with V8 power for towing comfortably.

Re: What siz pontoon 20' or 25'

After talking to several friends with pontoon boats and reading all the replys from this forum we have decided on the 25' with a 115 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. Thanks for everyones input it helped us to make the correct decision I believe. I'm sure I'll have more questions after purchasing our new boat. Thanks again
