I had some complications with a bearing and no lube, leading to a hub replacement, leading to a possible axle replacement (depending on condition of spindle once i can get a shop to knock the bearing race off for me). I have no idea what my boat/trailer weigh though. I have an 18ft 1989 Venture Fish and Ski (fiberglass), and a 77 Johnson 115HP outboard motor. When ordering a new axle, what weight limit should i be choosing? I see them for 2000, 2200, 3500#+, etc. Any info is appreciated!

Ayuh,... Measure the diameter of bearing quill, 'n buy a new axle with the same bearing dimensions...

That's pretty much where the Ratings come from....

By the time you buy a new hub and pay a shop to knock off the race you'll probably be able to buy a new axle. Look around on the interntet, they're pretty cheap. Like the others have said, your current is most likely 3500lb, bring the bearings into any place that sells them and they should be able to confrim it. Tractor Supply or a place like Northern Tool should be able to help.

Re: What size axle do i need?

A friend of mine runs a metal fabricator shop, and i dropped the axle off with him yesterday. He said he can get the race off and polish off the spindle, as he's done it before for others. I just hope the race hasn't chewed into the spindle too bad, if so i'll have to go the new axle route. I took my axle and hub to Tractor Supply this passed weekend, and they said they couldn't order a new axle for me since it wasn't in the Reese book, nor could they tell me where to go for any repair or replacement :( They had a hub that would work, but it didn't have a rubber seal for the bearings and they don't sell the seals either. I figure i'll just buy the hub from them, order some seals online, and "hopefully" the shop can repair my axle. A new 3500# axle online is $140-ish, before shipping, and with the hub replacement it'll be over $200 total. Then i'd STILL have to take it to the shop to have them weld on the spring brackets in the proper location. Once all is said and done, i''ll have prolly faired better off just buying another used boat trailer and replacing it's bearing as preventative maintenance. I actually wanted to go that route, but wasn't sure how to go about getting my boat off the current trailer and onto a new one while in my yard.

Bearings and spindle size chart is provided in the stickies at the very top of this forum. NAPA and most other auto stores can provide bearings and seals as well as push out the old races and push in the new ones if you are not capable of doing that.

www.abctrailerparts.com. About $115 for a full axle with hubs and spring perches already on there. If it's a weird size they'll build one custom for about another $10. That being said, it's nice to have a friend with a metal shop that can do hopefully free work on the old one. Around here I couldn't get anybody to weld on a new spindle for under $100.
