I just bought a Futura Mark2 HD for diving and snorkeling. Mostly for use in San Carlos, Mexico. I'm looking at Mercurys or Yamahas. What size 4 stroke would you recommend? I know a 40 or 50 would be great but I'm on a budget. :(

what is the boat rated for? you don't want under 70% of rated HP.

Min 20hp, max 50hp. I don't need balls to the wall, but I want to be able to overcome ocean current and maybe drag around a tube or skier. I just don't know anything about the power of newer 4 strokes and what they a capable of.

horse power is hp, either 2 or 4 stroke. the 4 strokes are heavier. for what you want i think 40 is minimum. thats 80% or recommended. 30 is 60%.

I would go with more power and use less of it. Ocean is ocean and can turn nasty in a very short space of time. Difference in fuel consumption between a 30 hp and 40hp is about 1 gallon per hour at WOT. Makes it a whole lot more comfortable with a tube in tow or puling a skier up.

The Mercury 2-stroke 25 should be available there. If not, any Yamaha 2-stroke above 25 hp in the non oil injected. If you are trailering the boat to various locations you could go with anything including a 4-stroke 25/30.
