what size prop?????

getting my boat pulled tommorrow to fix a spun hub. i dont know whats on there now."prop size". the marina said he'll pull it and order the prop. said it could be $210-$250. now i have an old prop on the boat, it shot but it came with the boat last year when i bought it. its a michigan prop i think sms 345 14x19. could i save money and get that prop? if it's a spare it should be the right one no? the marina told me dont go by the spare. i want to save money to being i'm tight. i have a 1984 cierra bayliner with an aq125a. does anyone have the prop specs for this boat or should i go by the spare.. it's getting done friday night and i'm pinched for time. #2 would west marine have the specs for my boat prop? thanks fella's..... ps.. not looking for hole shot..would like the factory prop.. it's an 84 so she's a little tired. if i could better top end would be nice...

Whoa there for a minute. $250 for a spun hub? You can get those fixed anywhere in the country for less than $50. What else is wrong with it?<br /><br />I just had a 14.25 x 20 in the shop last month, it got a new hub, some nicks taken out of the blades, the thing indexed (make sure all 3 blades were bent at the same pitch), a tad of cup added to it, polished, and balanced and it only cost me $100. Prop work isn't all that expensive and you would be simply amazed at what they can do.<br /><br />Thom

hey thom.. he's charging me $6 a foot to pull the boat out on his strap. he told me $50 to change the prop and he told me to buy a new prop.. thats 200-250 for that.. so everything together your looking at 400 or better..sucks becuase i dont have a trailer for the boat, cant yank it... my other question would be that can i get that "rubber for the prop??" i feel stupid paying 400 for a spun hub... and i fel i'm pretty active in the forum here and getting no help really hurts.... i need advise here..i trust this forum more then my marina...

From what I understand, they are charging him for a new prop.<br /><br />Engine he mentioned was a aq125a. Guessing that is a 260 HP inboard on a 24' Bayliner? If so, 14 x 19 sounds about right. It's right in the middle of the road as far as props that will fit that motor. It would max out at 15 x 21.

thanks...would 15x21 put a big strain on my lower end.. i would like slightly more topend...what prop above a 14x19 would be a step up for top end?

Well, that all depends on how strong your motor is still running. With age, you can lose power (compression) and thus a weaker engine with less pull. <br /><br />A step up would be the 14 x 21. I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to pull your boat nicely with that size.<br /><br />Steps down in pitch give you better hole shot, steps up in pitch give you better top end (until you're overpitched and then you lose hole shot and top end).

well i usually run at 4000 rpms.. i could go higher but i dont. would i be safe with 14x21? do you think that would "over pitch me? i apprieciate your time...

Your motor AQ125A is 105 h.p.your w.o.t should be around 4800 rpm. A 14x19 R prop is a good prop for what you have as long as your rpm's are not over 4800.If you are under say around 4300 rpm's with just a couple of people on the boat then you should definately go with a 14x17r.By the way the "R" is important.It means right drive or clockwise.If you are running low rpm's your motor is struggling(not good).Too high and yourrunning the risk of blowing the motor.

I'm sorry for the 2nd post ,but I thought about what I said and realized that I never asked what outdrive you have.I would assume that its a 270 Volvo.The answer I gave would still be the same.The only thing that could be different is the direction your prop would spin.The prop would have it stamped on it.If you took the prop off(very easy to do)You would see the numbers for pitch and rotation "R".

Ditto on Trebor7970.<br /><br />Removing/refitting the prop definately is DIY and an easy moneysaver. Can be done by standing behind the boat in shallow water. Place a piece of wood between the prop and antiventilation plate to lock it. Remove the cone and slide off the prop. POC!<br /><br />If your orig. prop worked OK, stay with the specs. Looking for more speed is OK, but not easily done on a narrow budget. You're thinking about the ol' engines condition (good), and should rather give it an easy run than make it struggle by going up in pitch.<br /><br />State the prop #'s and we'll give you the exact dimensions.<br /><br />The Michigan prop # seems to be wrong but I can find a SMC 345. It's a 3-blade 15x17" RH equiv of Volvo #814616-9 (which, btw. Volvo marks "HS" for High Speed).<br /><br />Consider both a prop job and 3rd party props (link<br /> http://www.boat-propellers.net) - cost ~ $120<br /><br />Finally Volvo states the same prop range for drive series 200, 270 and 280 with 1 1/8" splines with a note that some props ("long hub") fit the 280 only. Caution should be taken before buying from ie. ebay to ensure it'll actually fit your drive.

Hi jr, <br /><br />What is the size of the prop in the shop and what WOT RPM did it give you? The answer to those questions is the key but until then:<br /><br />I agree with trebor & UU. You've got an old 117hp motor pushing a 22ft glass boat, don't go to high in pitch, you need all the RPMs you can get.<br /><br />The max rpm for the 125a is 5000, I think a 14x17 (15x15 also available) is what you need but the 19" is o/k to keep you on the water until you've got the bucks. Just cruise and don't push the old girl to hard. Doesn't matter if you get a left or right prop, its easy to change the gearbox rotation.<br /><br />Aldo

Oh yeah - forgot to mention that: On the Volvo drive counter rotation is obtained by letting it run in reverse all the time. Simply reposition the link on the drive upper housing. It will then operate opposite on the gear cable movement.<br /><br />Thanks Dunaruna!
